| Glass by Naomi is a unique and innovative style of glass art, designed and composed by Naomi Kravitz, a young and inspiring artist with an open mind and a strong creative vision. In this modern age approach, she encompasses old techniques, reinventing them to higher levels of originality never seen before in the art world. Naomi focuses on transposing freehand sketches into live, three-dimensional glass art sculptures, while using color imagery to mirror movements throughout nature, sea and space. Naomi captures these components with her fine taste in color schemes and experimental improvisations. This fearless, non-traditional approach exemplifies new directions in the future of glassblowing. Even so, Naomi has taken the necessary steps in studying traditional glass Art through every avenue and opportunity available. She began her career at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, New York. From then, she proceeded to practice the art of glass at such renowned institutes as The Corning Glass Museum in upstate New York and Dale Chihuley's Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. Naomi recently taught a glass course at The University of Hartford where, four years prior, she had received her BA in the Fine Arts program for sculpture. A vast amount of Naomi's inspiration has come from traveling Europe and the west coast of America-visiting galleries and artist's studios, embracing every opportunity to meet inspiring people and experience lands foreign to her personal upbringing. These travels helped to flourish a vast array of styles and intuitive ideas which vessel into her work. Naomi's style is overtly unique in her ability to manipulate the molten glass into frozen sculptures, appearing to be on the verge of motion. These delicately vibrant vessels are created through swift performance followed by steps in a melodic rhythm consumed by heat, sweat, and molten particles stretching and bending in all sorts of contorted directions across the studio. This is complimented by blaring new age, righteous music, feeding the already intense atmosphere. Naomi says this only helps to transcend her passion and create work based on being "in the moment". In order to fully focus on her ideas, the music helps to block out all subconscious thoughts of reality allowing her to concentrate entirely on her work. The art of glassblowing can be heartless and sudden. Turning a piece is one step away from brilliance or one step away from disaster. "You never know the fate of a piece when you begin. The laws of nature, combining with chemistry and physics are either playing with you or against you." It is within this challenge of being a glassblower that Naomi's hard work and self control continues to shine. Naomi's works as a Gaffer consist of a virtuoso array of functioning figures such as bubbling glasses, charismatic chandeliers or swirling shades--she also creates organic pod-like vases stretching in every which way. Her collection of original sculptures, show her ever-changing style and ability to emulate any shape existing or imagined. This is a genuine originality orchestrated only from the mind she's honed from her experiences through travel, trial, and the drive to gain knowledge into the fine art of glassblowing. As Naomi's ideas expand and sculptures grow, it's exciting to know that this young artist has so much to offer the future of glassblowing, and art as a whole. |
